Kia ora Parents and caregivers of Kauri Hub,

Re: Home learning - Week 2

Due to learning being a home-based, on-line adventure during these historical times, the teachers have put together a project that we feel will be both engaging as well as educational. During our discussions, while planning this learning, we all agreed that the most important thing for our students, your children, right now is for them to feel happy and safe.

With that in mind, we have put together a unit of work that will allow our tamariki to explore and develop their creative skills. The project we are asking them to work on involves creating an art piece of their choice. This could be a painting, a musical composition or dance routine, a sculpture or construction, digital art, or a movie. We feel it is important that every child gets to choose what they create and how they create it.
Because art is a personal thing and should never be assessed, we, as teachers, will not be assessing the student’s final art piece. Nor will we be assigning a grade or mark to the art piece. What we will be assessing is the process that the students go through in order to create their art piece. To make this easy for parents, students and teachers, we are providing every student with a project template that will guide them through the process and will allow parents and teachers to provide written feedback to help support the students in their learning. Because we want all of our students to continue to practice and strengthen their skills in literacy and numeracy, we will be expecting the students to be recording their progress and the processes they use while creating their art. There will be plenty of opportunities to read and write during this project. Teachers will use the written content the students complete to assess specific writing needs. The teachers will continue to provide feedback and support to our students so they continue to make progress in their literacy learning. While there will be some mathematics used to create their art pieces, it probably won’t be enough to provide daily practice. Therefore the students will be expected to use the mathematics online tool ‘Prodigy’ each day.

This project will continue to be our main focus once we all return back to school for normal educational hours. In week 10, Kauri Hub will host an art exhibition where all our students will get to showcase their hard work.

Virtual hui with homeroom teachers will run at 10.00 AM daily from Wednesday, 15 April 2020, please join these by having students check their Gmail account and click the link from the email your student will receive. If any parents or caregivers need support with this home learning project, please feel free to contact your child’s homeroom teacher. All teachers will be available between the hours of 9-3 each day.
